Manzanar was the first of the ten large, purpose-built, concentration camps that imprisoned 120,000 Japanese Americans forcibly removed from the West Coast in the early months of World War II. Located in Owens Valley in Central California, more than 11,000 Japanese Americans were imprisoned there without charges or trials between March 1942 and November 1945.
